Hi, I am new to the site but have had a 65 convert. for 10 years. Slightly modified but have the original engine. I am in Colorado where I get to drive her 3 months out of the year.
I am looking at a 66 big block convert. but it has a California assigned vin. Any info on that out there? I assume it hurts the value but how much. Car was probably a theft recovery in the 70's. California erased all signs of original vin. Also missing is trim tags. Owner claims it to be an original big block car but how do I tell? Appears to be correct radiator, no overflow bottle, sway bar on rear, M21 four speed, higher rpm tach. Any other clues to look for?
Most importantly...should I stay away? Asking is $40K
Thanks for any info anyone may have.

Sounds like a good deal to me if it is a real BB; but, it may be a stolen car. Check the VIN on the frame to make sure it matches the title (they probably didn't remove that). | |

Good point. I can't imagine anyone removing the Vin tag or trim tag on one of these unless it was stolen.
The vin# is stamped into the frame on the left side (driver's side) in two places. With a mirror & flashlight and the car on a lift you may be able to read one of them. One is located along the top of the left frame rail toward the rear of the driver's door opening and the other is located above the rear axle. You'll probably have to pull the left rear wheel to get access. Again, both are stamped into the frame itself on the top of the boxed frame rail.
I wouldn't move forward on this deal unless you can positively identify it and have checked to see it is not a currently stolen vehicle.
Best of Luck! | |
